| SPRINGER CREEK - POST 2007 WILDFIRESThe Regional District of Central Kootenay has been made aware by the Ministry of Forest and Range and the Provincial Emergency Program of secondary hazards associated with intense wildfire behaviour such as was seen on the Springer and Sitkum Creek Fires. Since 2003 the province has been seeing some of the secondary effects of wildfire given drier soil condition and severity of the burns. These secondary effects include soil erosion, debris flows, and long term slope stability concerns. Generally, these hazards exist for a period of three to five years after the fire. Information for Springer Creek Fire - Affected residentsThe Ministry of Forests and Range and the engineering firm, Klohn Criippen Berger have now completed a post wildfire hazard risk assessment of the Springer Creek fire. The results of the report are available below. The Ministry of Forest and Range are doing mitigative measures on crown land in the burned area. Some of the mitigative measures involve removing roads and control ditches as well as revegetation and the use of straw to absorb surface water. They have also provided us access to a document titled, Information on Debris Flow Control Structures for Forest Engineering available below. Debris Flow Control Structures for Forest Engineering Linked below is information provided by Klohn Crippen Berger on “What Can You Do If You Live Near a Recently Burned Area?”. In addition the Springer Creek Fire Post Wildfire Risk Analysis and Preliminary Burn Severity Map are also available below. Paper copies of the report is available by contacting the Regional District. Attached Documents(all documents open in a new window)
