Heritage Conservation

The Regional District of Central Kootenay adopted Heritage Conservation Bylaw 1958 in July of 2008 to establish heritage conservation as an extended service within Electoral Areas D, G and H. During that time funding was received from the BC Heritage Branch to undertake heritage context planning within Electoral Area D and H. Several community meetings were held in which residents and interest groups identified the various heritage values associated with their communities. A copy of the survey and presentation can be viewed under 'Heritage Conservation Documents'.

The project resulted in compilation of three Heritage Context Reports and associated mapping which can be viewed under 'Heritage Conservation Documents'.

In August 2008, the service was expanded to include Electoral Area A and funding was applied for to complete Heritage Context Planning in Electoral Area A and G. This project is currently pending subject to funding.

The intent of the Heritage Conservation Program in the RDCK is to establish a community heritage register for the participating electoral areas which will result in recognition and conservation of the various heritage values within these areas.

Sandon Heritage Conservation Project

During the Official Community Planning process for the Slocan Lake North portion of Electoral Area H, it was identified that the community of Sandon was an area of high heritage value for the area, as well as the region. Two community meetings were held with residents, property owners and interested parties in May and June of 2009 to discuss the various options that could be pursued to ensure that the heritage values associated with the community could be managed in such a way as to encourage increased visitation to the community, protect heritage values and allow the community to evolve.

The RDCK has partners with the community to pursue funding to establish a Heritage Interpretive Program and Heritage Conservation Plan to ensure that the heritage values associated with the area are managed over the long term.

Please see attached documentation associated with the project, including the minutes from the meetings held in May and June of 2009.
