| Red Cross Swim LessonsIf you are unsure of your child's swim level, drop in during Public Swim for a FREE assessment Red Cross Swim Preschool Red Cross has 7 levels of swim progession for children aged 4 months through 5 years Parent & Tot Ages: 4 months - 4 years (with care-givers) We have classes for young children accompanied by their parents or caregivers, aged 16 & over. Using songs and water play children will learn submersion and breath control. With the assistance of the caregiver, they work towards front floats, back floats and direction changes. As children gain confidence and ability they are encouraged to try glides, basic kicks, and using bouyant objects including PFD's Preschool Ages 3-5 years Those children not yet ready for the challenges of these levels may choose classes with caregiver assistance. Skills taught at each level include: Sea Turtle: Relaxed submersion for 3 seconds, shallow water movement, assisted front and back floats for 3 seconds each, relaxed floats wearing PFD/lifejacket in shallow water Salamander: Rhythmic breathing 3 times, front float and recovery for 3 seconds, front glide for 3 seconds, back float and recovery for 3 seconds, back glide for 3 seconds, distance swim for 2 metres. Sunfish: Rhythmic breathing 5 times, front glide for 5 seconds, front glide and kick for 1 metre, roll-over glides with kick for 10 seconds, front swim for 2 metres, distance swim 5 metres. Crocodile: Rhythmic breathing 10 times, front glide and kick for 2 metres, back glide and kick 2 metres, side glide and kick for 1 metre, jump into deep water and surface support for 5 seconds, front swim for 5 metres, back swim for 5 metres, distance swim for 10 metres Whale: Rhythmic breathing 10 times, side glide and kick for 5 metres, front crawl for 7 metres, surface support in deep water for 20 seconds, back swim with sculling or finning for 7 metres, distance swim in deep water for 10 metres. Red Cross Swim Kids The Swim Kids program is for children ages 6 and older. This is a 10 level learn to swim program. These levels do not correspond to the previous AquaQuest levels. If you are unsure what level to register for, make an apppointment for a skills assessment. All our lifeguards are qualified swim instructors and we will be happy to do a skills assessment free of charge. Skills taught in each level include: Level 1: Rhythmic breathing 5 times, front float and recovery for 3 seconds, back float and recovery for 3 seconds, front glide for 3 seconds, front glide and kick for 5 seconds, back glide for 3 seconds, back glide and kick for 5 seconds, distance swim for 5 metres. Level 2: Rhythmic breathing 10 times, front float for 5 seconds, back float for 5 seconds, front glide and flutter kick for 5 metres, back glide and flutter kick for 5 metres, rollover and glide and flutter kick for 6 seconds, weight transfer in shallow water, distance swim for 10 metres. Level 3: Rhythmic Breathing 15 times, front crawl for 5 metres, deep water front and back floats for 5 seconds each, surface support in deep water for 20 seconds, distance swim 15 metres. Level 4: Rhythmic breathing 15 times (front crawl specific), front glide/side glide combo, back glide and kick with shoulder roll for 10 metres, front crawl 10 metres, surface support 45 seconds, distance swim 25 metres. Level 5: Rhythmic breathing 15 times, front crawl 15 metres, back crawl 15 metres, whip kick on back 5 metres, dolphin kick 5 metres. tread water 1 minute, distance swim 50 metres. Level 6: Front crawl 25 metres, back crawl 25 metres, elementary backstroke 15 metres, tread water 90 seconds. distance swim 75 metres. Level 7: Front crawl 50 metres, back crawl 50 metres, elementary backstroke 25 metres, whipkick on front 15 metres, eggbeater/tread water 3 mintues, distance swim 150 metres. Level 8: Front crawl 75 metres, back crawl 75 metres, elementary backstroke 50 metres, breaststoke 15 metres, eggbeater/tread water 3 minutes, dolphin kick 10 metres, distance swim 300 metres. Level 9: Front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary backstroke 50 metres, breaststroke 25 metres, distance swim 400 metres. Level 10: Front crawl 100 metres, back crawl 100 metres, elementary backstroke 50 metres, breaststroke 50 metres, vertical dolphin kick 10 seconds, butterfly drill 10 metres, distance swim 500 metres.
