CRESTON & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COMPLEX

FACILITY ENHANCEMENT PROJECT

SEPTEMBER 18, 2009

The sun rises majestic over both Goat Mountain and the Facility Enhancement Project as Heritage Roofing starts to lay the built up roofing over the steel decking. The addition of new building to old posed challenges and created innovative solutions in order to meet building codes and rainfall drainage requirements.

The meeting point where the curling arena roof joins the addition at the fitness area required special attention to proper curbing and flashing to reduce the chance of water penetration back into either building. Here, a worker hand torches membrane onto the curb prior to flashing.

The roof makeup is a proven design that will provide a long-term efficient cover. As shown, a vapour barrier is first placed over the metal “Q” deck, then approx. 3 inches of Styrofoam followed by a iso-cyanurate dense foam board and a torch down membrane. Not show will be the final top membrane with granules for mechanical protection.

Every day, a few more masonry walls go up as the Casecon crew makes record time on block laying. Below, one of the boys finishes up the opening where the fireplace will eventually go by the conversation pit. Laying block usually involves other trades as plumbing and electrical have to rise up sequentially as the wall is built.

Members of the Creston Valley Aquatic Society recently paid a visit and had a chance to take an up close and personal look at what many members dreamt about and worked towards either as part of the referendum committee or design team.

The setup for the last major pour on the building is just about complete as the formwork for the suspended slab and stairs awaits reinforcing steel and electrical. This area will be the stairs from the Creston room back into the main lobby and will also overlook the 2 story space into the main lobby from just outside what used to be the coatroom upstairs. Meanwhile, inside, spaces are being defined with walls, some of which will be constructed of steel studs - a standard commercial method of building and which will be covered with drywall. The next photo shows the fitness office and storage rooms overlooking the fitness track.

After a hiatus while the roof was being erected, Acapulco Pools has returned and made progress on the floor for the shallow end of the lap pool. The piping shown will be all the water inlets into the pool which have to be distributed in a designed fashion to make sure all the water is evenly exchanged through the filters with no dead spots. At the bottom of the photo is the bumped out area which will house the steps into the pool.

Electricity will play an important part in running the new facility and subsequently we will have a new service entering the building which will get rid of overhead lines and clean the neighbourhood up a bit. The pole and transformers seen in background will soon be gone. Pulling the new electrical lines requires a good deal of force - here a truck is used to pull 4 conductors, each approximately 1 inch thick over a few hundred feet from the main building to the transformer pad. Inside, smaller transformers reduce the incoming 600 volts to 120 or 208 volts where required.

As part of airhandling and necessary ductwork, we just received the main unit which weighs in at a healthy 8 tons and was placed on the second floor next to the fitness track via crane and rollers. Maintaining air quality in a pool environment is a complicated and critical part of building longevity and patron comfort.

This project is funded by The Canada-British Columbia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, the residents of the Creston Valley, and donations.
