CRESTON & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COMPLEX

FACILITY ENHANCEMENT PROJECT

OCTOBER 2, 2009

Representative of a true “Community Centre”, patrons in the aquatic facility virtually have box seats to a soccer or baseball tournament. This past couple weeks had Tony and the Acapulco Pool crew installing all the piping and rebar for the floor in the shallow end of the lap pool and the Razor Concrete boys placing it.

The orange markings on the floor are the metal screed pegs which provide the level to which concrete is to be poured. It was amazing to watch Danny and his concrete pump truck unravel his hose like an arthritic elephant without bumping or touching anything within the confined space of the pool hall. Soon, we will be swimming where the truck once sat.

Immediately following the pouring of the floor, the forms for the walls as well as all necessary plumbing, electrical and steel reinforcement began. Subsequently the wall was poured less than a week after the floor including the boxed out detail which will house stairs so you can walk into the lap pool at a leisurely pace.

More and more of the mechanical equipment is timed to show up on site. Here, massive hot water storage tanks await placement into the appropriate spots in the building.

This photo shows the coil of conductors waiting to tie into the existing overhead main power lines coming into the building, eliminating the pole and transformers. This will be a sub-feed from the new electrical room in the pool area.

Part of the improvements in the curling rink includes an overhead door onto the ice surface from the outside which will provide easier access for Trade Shows, Fall Fair and anything else we can think of. A ramp will be built to lead up into the area at a later date.

Meanwhile, back on the roof, new transitions where the old building joined the new were substantially tested with a few downpours. Everything performed as expected and drained appropriately.

This vast expanse of steel over the pool hall will be covered in the next couple weeks which will just about complete the roof portion of keeping the elements out.

The NW forming crew in concert with the Razor boys had a nice sunny day to place and finish the suspended slab and stairs which will be just east of the new entrance. You will be able to exit the Creston room, go left and look down into the main lobby or continue right down to the main level once the dust has settled . Depending on construction and destruction, we may start using these stairs sooner to access upstairs.

As Murphy's Law would have it, pouring the second story walls of the stairwell was not so sunny and warm. Provisions are already being made to adapt to the upcoming weather and all that it brings. These forms will be stripped this week and the steel erection leading ultimately to roof construction will begin.

This photo shows the formwork required to pour the back wall of the stairwell. You are facing the Creston Room bar and there is a temporary construction wall on the right hand side. An infill wall will be added once the forms are removed.

Mechanical is one of the largest portions of the project and many of the areas are starting to fill up with equipment such as the air handling room next to the fitness track. Most of the rooms will be heated and cooled using fancoil units (shown on left). These units are very efficient and circulate appropriate temperature water through coils while air is blown through - much like a radiator on a vehicle. These are typically hung in the ceiling space and can be controlled independently via thermostat.

This project is funded by The Canada-British Columbia Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund, the residents of the Creston Valley, and donations.
