| CRESTON & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COMPLEXFACILITY ENHANCEMENT PROJECTMarch 6, 2009Curling Arena It all came together Friday February 27th, 2009 as the revamped curling rink officially opened for a short but extremely busy season. Cutting the ceremonial ribbon from right to left are Curling Club President Vern Ronmark,, Director Larry Binks, Director John Kettle and Director Ron Toyota. Also in attendance - Design Team Member Candace Foy, Project Manager Wendell Marshall and RDCK Manager of Community Services Joe Chirico. The ceremony was held just hours prior to the Ladies Valentines Bonspiel opening and currently the Men’s Butterfly Bonspiel is taking place. There has been nothing but good reviews of the new ice surface, both for looks and playability. Following the Butterfly Bonspiel, the Creston Curling Club has at least 2 more spiels scheduled. Arena Changerooms Work continues on the Arena changerooms as the painting contractor is finishing the painting of the seat brackets and wall hooks in order to move on to the painting of the ductwork, piping and walls. The mechanical contractor has run much of the copper piping that will service the changerooms water requirements as well as the temporary waterline from the back under the bleachers which will be in place until the new boiler system is installed in the pool mechanical room. The ground prep and compacting for the emergency exit stairs is complete and the forming crew will be the next group in to work on those. The new door into the Thundercat changeroom has also been cut in to the end of the corridor.
Aquatic Centre While most of the columns have been poured for the aquatic section of the building, there will be a few more required in the lobby portion. Backfilling has started in the pool area where the mechanical and changerooms will be - this area will be filled and compacted for a slab on grade. Prior to backfilling, many of the surfaces have to be damp proofed which is the black surface you see in the photos. Once the bottom floor has been poured, shoring will be put in place for the suspended slab to be poured that will serve as the floor for the upstairs mechanical and fitness areas. The forming and pouring of the stairwell and elevator has taken place which is starting to give an idea of how the lobby will look in the future. Another change next week will be the relocation of the metal stairs that currently exit from the Creston room by 90 degrees to facilitate construction as well as maintain the fire exiting requirements.
