CRESTON & DISTRICT COMMUNITY COMPLEX

FACILITY ENHANCEMENT PROJECT

MARCH 26, 2010

Cloudy with a chance of rocks is the forecast in the pool as this photo shows the start of the mural above the hot tub area as well as the newly minted rockwork leading into the rejuvenating waters (the odd line through the windows is from stitching two photos into one).

The ductwork goes up and is painted shortly after installation. Paint used is an epoxy based product designed to resist the potentially moisture aggressive atmosphere in a pool setting.

Presto-Chango! is the key word as Adventure Designs starts on the rockwork which will adorn certain edges of the Leisure Pool and hot tub. Neither igneous nor sedimentary, these rocks start off as Styrofoam and are transformed with the addition of concrete and artful sculpting.

The most inspectors you will see in one room listen to narrative by Wendell Marshall, Project Manager as 20 or so members from the Kootenay Zone of the Building Inspection Officials of BC get a walkthrough of he facility.

The washrooms outside the upstairs Creston room meet their demise in order to provide the balance of the space for the Fitness Studio and hallway. For the short term, we are using washrooms downstairs during the rebuild process. The windows on the left look into the front lobby.

The Creston room stands a little emptier as Venture Mechanical finishes pulling out the old 30 year old forced air furnace system. They are now running piping to serve the 3 fan-coil units which will be hung in the ceiling space and will use the heat from the arena compressors for the room. The ceiling will be replaced once the new roof is put on and the mechanical installed.

In the design phase, it was thought that the pool would generate the “Wow!” factor for the new facility. Little did we realize that there would be a multitude of “Wow!” factors throughout both the new and old portions of the building. One example of this will be the new reception area immediately in the front as you arrive. Built by Traditional Timberframing Company who also did the outside timber work, the reception desk will compliment the wooden beams and rockwork around the pool.

The west side of the jobsite has been excavated to grade and the rebuilding process started for the walking path in front of the swimming pool. The path will provides access from the south to north ends of the parking lot. More complex than it appears, the backfill and retaining walls also have to act to support the foundation wall and subsequently the pressure of the water in the lap pool. Engineered into the retaining walls will be methods of capturing and redirecting any groundwater to maintain integrity of the structure.

Below, Colin from Hedlund Excavating, happily greases the excavator to continue with the building up of the grade on the south side of the building which will have the sidewalk and patio areas.
